Chicago Photographer + Kelly Ry Photography bio picture

Welcome, welcome!

Whether it's my home or my blog, I love visitors.  The ones that come to my home to visit add something new and interesting to the mix of daily life. But then they leave again, forcing me to return to daily life without their smiles and laughter.  The great thing about blog visitors is that they can come again and again, and need never leave.

Photographer Vincent Versace said, "We came to photography because the world moves us in such a way that we want to photograph what we see so others can be moved the way we were."  And so it was for me.  Despite my deplorable skills with a canvas and paints, I found the joy of creativity with a camera.

So welcome.  Make yourself at home.  Enjoy the people in love, the gorgeous details, and adorable families.  I'd love to hear from you.

PS. And as much as I love having visitors, I love being a visitor!  Although based in Chicago, IL I have had the pleasure traveling around the world to capture weddings and families, and I would love to come visit you.  Live across the country (or continent) or planning a destination wedding?  I'm a wonderful guest.  And I bring my camera.

Destination Family Photographer

Yes, I typed “Family” photographer and not “Wedding” photographer.

When you are planning your wedding day there are things you are willing to compromise on and things you will stand firm for.  For many couples one of the areas that they will not compromise on is their wedding photographer.  And who can blame them?  When the last cake crumbs are smushed on the tines of a fork and savored, the last glass of champagne raised and well-wishes made, wedding photographs are one of the few things that remain.  Tangible.  An evocative visual record of the day you pledged forever to the person of your dreams.  The one you may or may not have even realized you needed.  The images that remain should bring back the rush of emotion and memory of that moment.  Those hours of a celebration surrounded by dear family and friends.  Wedding photography is not something most couples are willing to compromise on.

So why should capturing your family be any different?  Perhaps it is my style of photography – intimate, emotion-filled, joyful – that makes me passionate about encouraging every family, no matter how big or small, to invest in documenting an hour or two, a snapshot if you will, of their family’s life.  Everyday snapshots are great, something to be treasured as they are the in-between times, the moments that are almost unable to be captured.  But then there are the deliberate times when you gather the family together, polish & shine ‘em a little more than normal, and set about giving me a little glimpse into the life of your family.  The giggles, the snuggles, (in the case of my family, the wrestling), or the casual interactions that just are your family.

So why am I reminding you of the need to capture your family’s moments?  Because I want to encourage you to not compromise on who you have there to capture those images.  That person who has the vision to photograph your family, just as they are, may live across the country, or down the street.  Just do me a favor, choose the one that truly speaks to you.

In case you didn’t know, should you have an interest in allowing me the opportunity to spend time with your family, I am available to come to you.  And to help offset the travel costs, might I suggest inviting a few of your friends in the area to join in?  If five or more of your friends & family schedule family portraits for the same weekend I’m in town to visit you, I have a token of appreciation just waiting for you, to say thanks for spreading the word.

Brandi in Portland, OR will be the first recipient of such a token, as a thank you for inviting me to visit her and six other families in late August.  I can’t wait!
